Nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas, is a colorless, odorless gas that for years was used as part of a parlor trick before it was discovered to be able to help people relax during their dental appointments. The gas is administered through a mask that covers your nose. You simply breathe normally, and the gas will quickly take effect. While you will not lose consciousness, you may feel very calm and relaxed, and some people experience a sense of euphoria. When your appointment is over, the mask will be removed, and the effects of the gas should wear off within minutes. You should be able to resume your normal activities as soon as you leave the office. Dentists have safely used nitrous oxide for many years, and some prefer it as a method for pediatric sedation.
